EMC AX Series Maker Tops PBBA Marketplace in 2014’s Second Quarter
The global purpose-built backup appliance (PBBA) market experienced significant growth in the second quarter of this year, according to a recent article from Business Wire.
Worldwide purpose-built backup appliance (PBBA) factory revenues grew 8.5% year over year totaling $783.2 million in the second quarter of 2014 (2Q14), according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Purpose-Built Backup Appliance Tracker. Total PBBA open systems factory revenue increased 11.1% year over year in 2Q14 with revenues totaling $712.7 million while the mainframe market experienced a decline of -12.2% for the same period. Total worldwide PBBA capacity shipped, for open systems and mainframe PBBA systems, reached 487,574 terabytes, an increase of 19.5% year over year.
“Growth in the worldwide PBBA market came roaring back in the second quarter after a dismal start in the first quarter,” said Robert Amatruda, Research Director, Data Protection and Recovery. “Customers continue to embrace and understand the value that appliance form factors bring to their environments to meet their growing data protection and recovery challenges.”
With the increased customer adoption and use of PBBA systems for storage, backup, and recovery optimization, along with exceptional growth the industry experiences yearly, it is clear that the technology won’t be going away anytime soon, and that rumors of its demise are greatly exaggerated.
Reason behind the growth
Experts believe the exceptional industry growth is due to the growing need of many of today’s businesses to improve backup window time, achieve seamless integration with current backup utilities, and accomplish faster restore and recovery times. Experts add that this trend is likely to continue in the foreseeable future as more customers realize PBBA’s benefits in terms of rapid data recovery, deduplication, and virtual server protection.
EMC leads the pack
In the PBBA market, EMC, manufacturers of the discontinued but well-lauded EMC Clariion line is, by and large, the leading vendor for the second quarter of 2014 with a 63.7% market share. EMC’s revenue during the period rose by 10.7 % compared to the previous year to reach $498.7 million.
